The 2014 festival…just the facts

Friday Harbor Film Festival’s second annual weekend-long event, held November 7, 8 and 9, 2014, was even more successful than its inaugural weekend last year. Participation increased by 55% over 2013’s attendance as islanders and visitors flocked to town to view an exciting selection of documentaries related to the Pacific Rim.

A total of 3056 attendees (counted by entrance to each film) viewed 30 full-length films, 12 short films and attended five special events over the three days of the Festival.

Attendance by day was:
Friday — 927
Saturday — 1154
Sunday — 975

In addition, 70 people attended the added Monday morning screening of DamNation and Return of the River, two of the Festival’s most popular offerings.

The increase in attendance this year can most likely be attributed to more affordable family pricing.  But even despite lower ticket prices, revenue increased by 25% over 2013.

Without local volunteers and sponsors the Film Festival would not succeed. 155 individuals volunteered their time and talents, receiving free film passes in exchange for their involvement.  63 businesses and local organizations sponsored the Festival financially and with in-kind donations.

During the Film Festival ferry traffic increased considerably, as many visitors traveled to Friday Harbor.  Compared to the same weekend in 2013, ferry traffic to Friday Harbor was up by 36%.  Of that percentage one-fourth were vehicles and three-fourths were walk-on passengers.  Since all Festival venues are within walking distance of the ferry, it appears that many off-islanders chose to leave their cars on the mainland – minimizing traffic congestion in Friday Harbor as well as having a positive environmental impact.
