Chihuly Fire & Light (directed by Peter West) follows the renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly as he conceives and creates an extraordinary exhibition of his works – both new and archival – for the de Young Museum in San Francisco. The exhibition, put together in 2008, filled 11 galleries of the museum, and represented the breadth and scope of the artist’s creative vision during the prior four decades. From Chihuly’s studio in Seattle to installation sites throughout San Francisco, Chihuly Fire & Light observes the artist at work with his team. In addition to interviews with architect Frank Gehry and other artists, art critics and museum executives, the film highlights the collaborative qualities of Chihuly’s creative process, in which he entrusts hundreds of talented glassblowers to execute his vision – creations that brilliantly combine the simplicity of the glass medium with the extraordinary innovation of the artist.
