Drawing the Tiger

A Sundance Institute Documentary

Drawing the Tiger (directed by Amy Benson and Scott Squire) presents the idea that educating young women in developing countries can be a road towards combating global poverty. But it can also be a dangerous road. The film paints an intimate portrait of the price one family pays for what they believed would be their golden opportunity. Filmed over seven years, it is the story of an untouchable village family in Nepal whose brightest child, Shanta, is awarded a charity scholarship to attend school in the capital city. When she doesn’t return home, the family is forced to survive without her and the opportunity they believed could turn their lives around. Drawing the Tiger is a powerful film that explores Shanta’s life, her world and her family’s life, and what happens when not everything goes as anticipated.
