Journey to Spirit Island

This is a beautifully photographed story that is set in the San Juan Islands and on the Olympic Peninsula. The family-oriented drama follows Maria, a teenaged Native American girl living on a reservation, who has been brought up in two worlds. Nurtured in the old ways by her grandmother, a tribal elder and shaman, Maria is also part of the modern world of school, television and friends who have little interest in the old Native American ways. During a summer kayaking trip Maria, her brother and two young white friends from Chicago become caught up in a strange adventure involving the tribe’s sacred burial island, an ancient curse and a magic canoe. Their survival depends on Maria’s ability to meet the challenge of bridging the gap between her two worlds.
