Raivavae: The World & History of a Seafaring People (directed by Alexandra Edwards) takes viewers on an archaeological tour of Raivavae, an isolated island in the South Pacific. Polynesian navigators settled there nearly 1,200 years ago, and an intriguing local culture flourished, with the residents relying on subsistence farming and fishing, and developing settlements marked by elaborate religious platforms. Archaeologist Edmundo Edwards has visited the island numerous times over the last 29 years, including completing an archaeological survey that mapped a total of 610 ancient sites, some of which are explored in the film. An appreciation of these sites, as well as the island’s unique history and culture, are ever more critical as Raivavae finds itself at a crossroads. Over the years, explorers, whalers, traders and missionaries have brought in new perspectives, and a new airport – coupled with the astounding natural beauty of the island – may start to bring in tourism, potentially leading the island to a more prosperous future.
