Amidst the darkening backdrop of Delhi's apocalyptic air and escalating violence, two brothers devote their lives to protect one casualty of the turbulent times: the bird known as the Black Kite.
ABOUT THE FILM
All That Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen, follows two brothers who run a bird hospital dedicated to rescuing injured black kites, a staple in the skies of New Delhi, India. In one of the world’s most populated cities, where cows, rats, monkeys, frogs, and hogs jostle cheek-by-jowl with people, the “Kite Brothers” care for thousands of these mesmerizing creatures that drop daily from New Delhi’s smog-choked skies.
As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate, the relationship between this family and the neglected kites forms a poetic chronicle of the city’s collapsing ecology and deepening social fault lines.
In a 2022 interview with Factual America Podcast, Shaunak Sen spoke of the intent behind the film's visual style: "The idea was to shoot it not like a regular nature doc or wildlife doc, but make it cinematic... We took our time. We wanted to shoot it like a proper high art film and not like a wildlife doc, so we committed ourselves to the visual grammar of it."
All That Breathes, produced by HBO Films, has been nominated for a 2023 Academy Award. It has won numerous film festival prizes for Best Documentary and Best Direction, including the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema – Documentary.
A commenter on IMDb stated: “Couple of comments: this is not a straight-forward documentary. It features dream-like sequences as it reflects on how mankind and animals must evolve in an ever-changing environment. We also get a fascinating glimpse into the day-to-day life of an average family in New Delhi (very cramped housing, chaotic overall atmosphere). Last but not least, we see hoe this family, part of the 200+ million Muslims in India, deals with the blatant anti-Muslim law that was passed in late 2019. Absolutely fascinating stuff, filmed brilliantly, and with a great original score to boot.”
