Be A Part OF The Action! Be A FHFF Volunteer!
There are a variety of ways to volunteer for the Friday Harbor Film Festival (FHFF). Each volunteer opportunity, listed below, is crucial to the success of the FHFF. There is a job for every interest and talent. Best of all, volunteering is a fun, rewarding way to become a part of this great event.
November 4-6, 2016 marks the fourth year of the FHFF. It just keeps getting better and better. The FHFF depends upon volunteers, like you to create this fantastic event, which benefits the local community, while bringing thought provoking, quality films into the limelight. Join our film community!

Please note, there is a mandatory orientation training prior to the festival, attend either November 1 – OR – November 2, 2016 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Friday Harbor House.
All volunteers are also invited to attend the Volunteer Appreciation party after the festival at The Grange. This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Bash is scheduled for November 11, 2016 from 6 to 9 pm.
Leadership positions are needed for each job/location. Generally, two leads per position/venue will work together. One lead position must be present for all shifts. Leads will direct volunteers, fill in duties as needed. All LEADS must have text capabilities. LEADS will attend all training/orientation dates prior to festival. Venue LEADS have additional duties (see job description).
The greatest perk is being a part of the team that creates this amazing event for our community! Each volunteer will receive FHFF t-shirt, film tickets, and training. Volunteer hours earn film tickets during the festival, and an invitation to the Volunteer Appreciation Bash, held after the festival. Lead volunteers also receive a festival all access pass.
Film Festival Office and Information Center
This position is the face of the festival! Volunteers will work in the FHFF Office and information Center to provide customer service, information, general office tasks, sign in for other volunteers. You will also assist as liaison for filmmaker’s, and help to manage filmmaker’s lounge. Positions begin October 31 – November 7, 2016.
4 volunteers are needed for 3 daily shifts:
Film Maker’s GALA – Set Up / Serving / Break Down
Help make the Filmmaker’s Gala a sparkling event. A variety of volunteer positions are needed on Friday, November 4, 2016, including Food Pick up/Set up, Ticket Takers, and
Food & Drink Servers, including clean up.
Film Venue Support
Work in the Heart and Soul of the FHFF. Sign up at one of our six film venues: the Whittier & Gubelman at the SJC Theatre, The Grange, Friday Harbor House, the Earthbox, and the Brickworks. Choose a venue and a shift. Help to welcome and count film goers, punch tickets, direct audience members, answer questions. Some set up and break down may be required. Two volunteers per shift of four hours or less needed at each venue, November 4-6, 2016.
Please Note – Two Venue LEAD positions are needed at each venue. Co-Leads will determine their schedules for coverage of all shifts. Venue LEAD job responsibilities include daily pick-up and return of films for respective venues, and filing of films at FHFF Office and Information Center. Venue LEADS also act as projectionists at their venue. Duties also Include prescreening scheduled films for quality control prior to festival dates. All LEADS must have text capability. Training is provided.
Master of Ceremonies
As Master of Ceremonies you are the voice of the Festival at one of the six film venues. Master of Ceremonies introduce the films and moderate Q & A sessions afterward. Select a Venue and shift. Master of Ceremonies will have breaks during their shifts. Training and scripts provided.
Box Office Concierge
This volunteer position is located in the foyer at the SJC Theatre during the FHFF. The Concierge provides superior customer service, information, sell FHFF retail products. Must be flexible, may be asked to fill another venue position if needed. Training is provided.
One Lead needed & Two volunteers are required for each shift: November 3 – 6, 2016
Venue Tech Support
Do you have awesome tech skills? Under direction of our Technical Director Lead, may also fill in as digital projectionist/sound technician as needed. Must be able to troubleshoot those pesky glitches to keep the films flowing smoothly. Choose your preferred venue and shift. Must have text capability for communication. Training is provided.
Projectionist – SJCT: (Whittier & Gubelman): Responsibilities include prescreening scheduled films for quality control, which can be done weeks in advance. Daily film routing for Gubelman and Whittier screenings, morning shift picks up – evening shift returns/file. Includes trouble shooting technical issues as they may arise.
Technical Venue Support (On Call): Two shifts per day, needed. These are “On Call” positions, must be flexible, and able to quickly resolve video glitches or technical difficulties at the selected venue(s) – Brickworks, Earthbox, Friday Harbor House; the Grange.
Volunteer Appreciation Bash – Support
The Volunteer Appreciation Bash needs Volunteers! We need help with set up, bus, and clean up for our party, held November 13, 2016 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. We love our volunteers, and will have special recognition for those who help during YOUR appreciation event!
