14th Annual Friday Harbor Film Festival happens October 22–25, 2026 | Friday Harbor, Washington
The Friday Harbor Film Festival (FHFF) is now accepting documentary film submissions for its 2026 festival, taking place October 22–25, 2026, on San Juan Island in Washington State. Filmmakers from around the world are invited to submit their work for consideration during the open submission window, now through August 1, 2026.

Set against the stunning natural backdrop of the San Juan Islands, the Friday Harbor Film Festival is dedicated exclusively to documentary storytelling—films that entertain, inspire, enlighten, and encourage. Each year, the festival brings together filmmakers, audiences, and changemakers to engage with powerful stories that deepen our understanding of the world and one another.
"We had such a wonderful experience at FHFF! From chatting with the team to other filmmakers and local community members attending, we felt so welcomed and enjoyed every event put on throughout the weekend." - Natalie Taylor, Counting Orca
Friday Harbor Film Festival Film Submissions: Documentary Film Categories
Filmmakers may submit work in the following categories:
Feature Documentary Films
Feature documentaries run 41 minutes or longer and are expected to deliver compelling narratives that uncover truths, challenge perspectives, and captivate audiences.
Short Documentary Films
Short documentaries run 40 minutes or less and demonstrate the power of concise storytelling—whether through intimate portraits, urgent issues, or focused explorations.
Young Filmmakers Showcase
This category highlights emerging voices with short documentary films (3–10 minutes) created by filmmakers in two age groups: 13–17 and 18–26. Both live-action and animated documentaries are welcome.
Themes to Explore
All submissions align with one of three thematic areas that define the festival’s programming:
Explorers & Adventures
Films that capture the spirit of exploration, discovery, and risk—on land, at sea, or in space.
Things to Consider
Thought-provoking documentaries addressing global challenges such as environmental issues, health, science, social justice, and innovation, with the goal of encouraging awareness and action.
Tales from the Heart
Human-centered stories that celebrate resilience, extraordinary achievements, natural beauty, inspiring people, places, and artistic expression.
Filmmaker Engagement & Festival Experience
The Friday Harbor Film Festival places strong emphasis on filmmaker participation and dialogue. Every screening is followed by a filmmaker Q&A, either in person or via a pre-recorded interview when attendance is not possible—though in-person participation is strongly encouraged.

A highlight of the festival is the Filmmakers Forum, a relaxed and engaging event designed specifically for documentary filmmakers to interact with one another and with audiences. Moderated by award-winning filmmakers, the forum offers insight into the art and process of documentary filmmaking—from planning and production to real-world impact. Visiting filmmakers participate in an open discussion, with audience members invited to ask questions and join the conversation.
"The filmmakers forum gave every one a chance to share the background of their projects and engage in a well curated conversation about non-fiction filmmaking." - Austyn Steelman, Paddles on the Water
Additional festival events include the Opening Night Gala honoring filmmakers, a Filmmaker Reception, and the Closing Night Awards Ceremony on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
On the final night of the festival, the Audience Choice Awards celebrate audience-selected excellence, with “Best of” honors presented to filmmakers across 10 distinct categories recognizing outstanding feature films, short films, and thematic showcases.
